Paula Murray : Connexions

Paula Murray : Connexions

À partir du 4 octobre 2023

Ceramic artist Paula Murray  presents two new series in her window exhibition.

In Scrolls Series, she is interesting in diverse ways of knowing, and how we acquire and share knowledge. The artist adds: “We live in an age of unparalleled access to information. Our challenge is sorting fact from fiction, truth from spin.” Clay tablets recorded text as early as 4,000 BC in Mesopotamia. Once fired, it could not be altered. As lines mysteriously emerge in the porcelain, new information is recorded, inviting us to grasp its meaning.

The Vessels Series shows how the artist is drawn to ceramic. The materials and processes have affinities with the human condition. She is interested in the exchange of energy that is essential to life, be it intrinsic or extrinsic. How we respond and engage with the injury of experience—within, with each other. In her exploration of the metaphor of fracture lies the potential of a coherent whole.

About the artist

Born in Ottawa, Paula Murray studied science at the University of Ottawa, ceramics at Sheridan College and completed two residencies at The Banff Centre. She has received multiple creation grants from The Canada Council and CALQ for her distinctive work. She was elected to the Royal College of Art (RCA) in 2006 and the International Academy of Ceramics in 2017. Her work is part of many public and private collections worldwide. Living in Gatineau Park since 1980, her full-time studio practice has been inspired by her close relationship with nature, and the years spent sailing between Canada and South America raising her two children. Her discovery of the Baha’i Faith and her ongoing study of spiritual writings inspire many of the themes explored in her work.
