November 7th, 2024, 1:30 to 2:30 PM
On November 7 at 1:30pm, La Guilde welcomes Amisut curator Ooleepeeka Eegeesiak for a guided tour of the exhibition. This activity aims to explore the complexity of Inuit art cooperatives and their associated issues, while presenting the work of the ten artists in the exhibition.
All of the artists in Amisut are developing their practices outside the Arctic co-op system, and therefore independent of the existing distribution networks. Amisut was created with the support of Inuit Futures in Arts Leadership : le projet Pilimmaksarniq / Pijariuqsarniq, an innovative, hands-on mentoring and training program that encourages Inuit and Inuvialuit to become leaders in all areas of the arts. Within the context of these vibrant, expansive communities, these artists further Inuit artistic autonomy.
About the curator, Ooleepeeka Eegeesiak
Ooleepeeka Eegeesiak is an Inuk/qallunaaq born in Iqaluit, Nunavut; raised in Treaty 6 and 7; and currently living in unceded Anishinaabe Algonquin lands, Ottawa. Her curatorial, writing, and visual practices centre around diaspora, kinship, ecology, storytelling, and climate change. Eegeesiak’s work can be found in ROOM Magazine’s 44.3 Indigenous Brilliance issue; in an Inuit Art Foundation online artist project titled “terraform”; and was a part of Coulees Remember Glaciers, a 2023 exhibition in the Christou Gallery at the University of Lethbridge. Her recent curatorial project includes -miut at Mitchell Art Gallery, which considers what it means to be Inuk living in the south through work by five contemporary Inuit artists living in Treaty 6 and 7, Alberta, and a zine featuring Inuit contributors living outside of Inuit Nunaat. She currently works at the National Gallery of Canada in the role of curatorial assistant.
