Ray Fadden (1910-2008) was a teacher, author, and influential figure among the Mohawks of Akwesasne, who adopted him into the Mohawk wolf clan and gave him the name Tehanetorens, translating to “He Walks through the Pines.” Growing up in the Adirondack Mountains and being part Mohawk himself, he spent many years learning about the Mohawk culture and history both from books and from elders he met throughout the Iroquois Confederacy. He devoted his entire career to educating and fighting against the negative characterization of Indigenous people, notably by publishing a series of articles detailing the many contributions the North American Indigenous had made to modern civilization, ranging from technological innovations to foodstuffs and even democratic traditions.
