Shelley Niro is a renowned multidisciplinary artist from the Kanyen’kehaka (Mohawk) Nation, known for her exploration of Traditional Stories and pushing boundaries within her matriarchal culture. Through various media such as photography, installation, film, and painting, she brings visibility to Indigenous women and girls. Based in Brantford, Ontario, Niro has gained recognition from numerous organizations in Canada and internationally. Her video work, "The Shirt," debuted at the Venice Biennale in 2003. She received the inaugural Aboriginal Arts Award from the Ontario Arts Council in 2012, as well as the Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts in 2017. Niro also received the Scotiabank Photography Award in the same year and the Paul de Hueck and Norman Walford Career Achievement Award from the Ontario Arts Foundation in March 2020.
