Samonie Toonoo is an Inuk artist from Kinngait (Cape Dorset, NU) specializing in sculpture. His artistic career began in his early twenties when he mostly started carving realistic elements from Arctic wildlife. Over time—as his technique and personal style developed—he started incorporating human figures and abstraction into his work. His pieces are distinctive for their incorporation of dark serpentines and light caribou antlers, which together create a strong contrast symbolizing the connection between the human and spirit worlds. The most recurring themes in his work include death, religion, pop culture, and technology. His work is in several art galleries, including the TD Gallery of Indigenous Art (Toronto, ON).
