Saimaiyu Akesuk

Born in Iqaluit (NU) and raised in Kinngait (Cape Dorset, NU), Saimaiyu Akesuk is one of the most original of the group of emerging artists from Kinngait Studios. Working with drawing and printmaking, Saimaiyu Akesuk was first encouraged to start drawing by renowned graphic artist Ningeokulu Teevee, with whom she took a class at the Nunavut Teaching Education Program. Often depicting animals with a touch of whimsy, the artist’s unique compositions are marked by the combination of strong colours, bold lines, and dynamic yet simple shapes rendered with soft tenderness. Her work has been exhibited across Canada and is part of the collections of the Brooklyn Museum (New York, USA) as well as the TD Bank Financial Group (Toronto, ON).
