Born and raised in Kinngait (Cape Dorset, NU), Ricky Jaw learned to carve at a very young age by observing his father Matthew Saviawjuk Jaw, a well-known carver. His first sculpture was a dog team pulling a qamutik, which has since been his favourite scene to carve. While his work often depicts traditional subject matter, he also enjoys creating pieces that showcase contemporary Inuit life, such as Skidoos and motorbikes. Ricky Jaw is a frequent attendee at the Great Northern Arts Festival of the Nunavut Arts and Crafts Association (NACA).
