Based in Kinngait (Cape Dorset, NU), sculptor Qaqaq Ashoona (1928-1996) was a hunter and trapper. He was adept at intertwining heavy and tight forms with lighter fluid elements. He is known for his representations of mythology and spirituality, as well as depictions of women. There is always a loving touch in his unique faces, clothing, and details. Qaqaq Ashoona works are part of collections such as those of the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa, ON), Winnipeg Art Gallery (MB), Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (QC), and the Canadian Museum of History (Gatineau, QC).
