Born in Kinngait (Cape Dorset, NU), Pootoogook Jaw started carving at an early age by learning from his father. He is known for his detailed renditions of Arctic wildlife, hunters, drum dancers, and scenes of traditional Inuit life. Actively involved in mentoring younger generations, Pootoogook Jaw organized a carving program through the Nunavut Training Company to help new carvers develop their talents. As well as being included in several exhibitions in Canada and internationally, his work is in prestigious collections such as those of the Musee d’art Inuit Brousseau (Quebec City, QC) and the Museum of Anthropology (Vancouver, BC).
