Pitaloosie Saila is a prolific artist based in Kinngait (Cape Dorset, NU). Since beginning her artistic practice in 1965, she produced over 1 450 drawings and 165 prints. Her artwork ranges from realistic to more surreal and tends to focus on people, in particular women, as well as various species of birds found in the Arctic. The details and shading effects in her work create texture and depth within her images that contrast the bold one or two-tone backgrounds. In addition to being featured in over 150 exhibitions and included in the Cape Dorset print catalogue since 1968, her work is held in numerous major institutions throughout Canada and the United States. In 2004, she was appointed to the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts.
