Based in Kinngait (Cape Dorset, NU), Ohito Ashoona is an Inuk sculptor and printmaker. Growing up on an outpost camp, his upbringing gave him a thorough knowledge of Inuit spirituality and a sensitivity to the Arctic wildlife, which often appear in his work. Ohito Ashoona creates imaginative scenes and often incorporates a playful relationship between figures and animals in his work. In 2002, he earned the National Aboriginal Achievement Award for his excellence in carving and his works are a part of collections such as those of the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto, ON), the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery (AB), the Winnipeg Art Gallery (MB), and the Canada Council Art Bank.
