Melissa Peter-Paul is an experienced quill artist from the Abegweit First Nation (Epekwitk, PEI). Her training in quillwork is rooted in her upbringing as a Mi'kmaw woman surrounded by a family of basket makers. Her practice focuses this ancestral technique that her maternal grandfather's ancestors excelled at. She completed her training at Mi'kmaq Quill Art (Dartmouth, NS) and now works with porcupine quillwork. In 2019, she launched her professional career with her first solo exhibition at Receiver Coffee (Charlottetown, PE) presented by This Town is Small. Dedicated to sharing her knowledge with the community, she is part of The Quill Sisters, a group of contemporary quill artists whose goal is to educate and preserve the traditional practices and ornate patterns of their ancestral work while developing their styles and expanding the boundaries of the tradition within modern times.
