Emerging Inuk artist Mathew Flaherty grew up in Grise Fiord (NU), the northernmost Canadian public community where the sun shines 24 hours a day from April through August. At the age of seven, Mathew Flaherty carved his first sculpture. While he is highly self-taught, the distinguished Grise Fiord's artist Looty Pijamini influenced him. Mathew Flaherty has been based in Kinngait (Cape Dorset, NU) since 2019, where resident artist Parr Parr taught him further sculpting techniques.
