Born in a small hunting camp near Inukjuak (Nunavik, QC), Inuk artist Lucassie Echalook is best known for his stone sculptures. He began carving in 1950 to help support his family during the difficult years following his father's death. His sculptures—primarily depicting hunting scenes or shamanic transformations—are distinguished by their use of solid masses and merging figures creating little interplay between open and closed spaces. Lucassie Echalook’s work has been extensively exhibited across the globe and is held in private and public collections such as those of the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco (USA) and the British Museum in London (England).
