Based in Kinngait (Cape Dorset, NU), accomplished sculptor and printmaker Kiugak Ashoona (1933-2014) was amongst the early participant in the Kinngait art production movement. His sculptures are known for their fluidity and dramatic imagery, such as gestural poses, sharp beaks, and expressive eyes. Primarily working with deep green serpentinite, his sculptures are highly detailed, dynamic, and challenging. Kiugak Ashoona often explored the relationship between people and beings in his works, along with their connection to the land. He was inducted as an Officer of the Order of Canada (2000) and elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (2003).
