Born in Ikarasaq (NU), Kellypalik Qimirpik (1948-2017) was a talented sculptor based in Kinngait (Cape Dorset, NU). He started carving when he was a teenager, learning from his brother Allashua Atsiaq. He mostly sculpted large-size dancing wildlife as well as transformative compositions, skillfully balancing the weight of the stone with the movement of his subject. In 2002, he designed and carved a 30-foot tall sculpture of an Inukshuk, one of the largest of its kind in North America, which was installed in the Toronto Inukshuk Park (formerly Battery Park). In addition to being held in prestigious institutions such as the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa, ON) and the Winnipeg Art Gallery (MB), Kellypalik Qimirpik’s work has been exhibited across Canada and internationally.
