Born in 1947 in Pessamit, on the North Shore of the St. Lawrence River (QC), Joséphine Bacon is a poet, director, lyricist, teacher, and leading author in Quebec. Sent to a residential school in Maliotenam, 16 km east of Sept-Îles, she managed to avoid being completely uprooted by mixing with young people from the surrounding communities, which allowed her to converse in her mother tongue. By working as a translator-interpreter with the elders — those who hold traditional knowledge and wisdom — she has learned to listen to their words. Josephine Bacon often says of herself that she is not a poet, but that in her nomadic and generous heart, she speaks a language filled with poetry which echoes the voices of the elders who have marked her life.
