Born in Kinngait (Cape Dorset, NU), Johnnysa Mathewsie started to carve at the age of twelve. Hailing from a family of acclaimed artists, he learned by observing the work of his father, his grandfather, and his uncle, renowned sculptor Padlaya Qiatsuq. Johnnysa Mathewsie continuously develops his forms and techniques. He is skilled at carving both figurative and animal sculptures, more specifically the Canada goose, which he sculpts with intricate details and wings spreading up towards the sky.
