Born in Kinngait (Cape Dorset, NU) and now based in Winnipeg (MB), Goota Ashoona is a multidisciplinary artist who primarily carved in soapstone and whalebone. She also produced wall hangings, small ornaments, and traditional Inuit dolls. Her sculptures reveal the strong influence of her father's style, Kiugak Ashoona, and delicate but detailed treatment of figurative subjects, most of which are women and children. Goota Ashoona is a representative and advocate for Inuit art abroad and has travelled extensively throughout North America for her art practice with her husband Bob Kussy. Her work is part of many public collections, including the Winnipeg Art Gallery (MB), the Haida Heritage Centre (BC), and the Canada Council Art Bank.
