Daniel Shimout (1972-2022) was an artist born and based in Salliq (Coral Harbour, NU). He comes from a line of artists and has been carving since childhood, thanks to the apprenticeships of his father, Anakudlak Shimout. Early on, he mastered the carving of boats and small pieces of ivory. Later, his work turned to more spiritual themes, such as Sednas and shamans. His style stands out for its unique fusion of realism and fantasy. Daniel Shimout's delicately rendered figures include details worked from materials he finds at his hunting camps. The artist has had several gallery and museum exhibitions, with his first solo show in 2014 at Feheley Fine Arts (Toronto, ON).
