Born in Nueltin Lake (NU), Alex Alikashuak grew up in Rankin Inlet (NU) and is currently based in Winnipeg (MB). Although Alex Alikashuak learned to carve at 11, it wasn't until the 1990s that he dedicated himself to his art practice after a career in politics during which he was highly involved in his people's land claim negotiations. Through abstract forms and the use of various mediums, including stone, deer antler, and bone, Alex Alikashuak creates unique and distinctive compositions. His work often relates to traditional Inuit stories and myths.
