A non-profit organization since 1906, La Guilde is committed to supporting Inuit, First Nations, Métis, and contemporary craft artists to ensure the viability of their artistic practices. It offers a space of sharing and exploration through a wide range of exhibitions, cultural activities, and educational programs to develop knowledge, as well as raise awareness and openness. La Guilde continues to preserve and develop a permanent collection of Canadian art.

La Guilde, founded in 1906, is committed to supporting and encouraging Inuit, First Nations, Métis, and contemporary craft artists. The Guild's documentation collection comprises 80 linear meters of archives that date back to 1874 (documents, photos, periodicals, and engravings) La Guilde also has a significant permanent collection of approximately around 1,500 objects.

DESCRIPTION

La Guilde is looking for a university student candidate, ideally graduate level, but undergraduate candidates will be considered. Areas of expertise will ideally be in archival science, digital information management, history, art history, or any other related fields of education and training.

The goal of this YCW student mandate for the summer of 2024 is to continue the organization, classification and description of the archives, particularly the Inuit and contemporary craft exhibitions held at La Guilde, as well as their digitization, according to the standards of the CAC and the RDDA. This mandate also includes the updating of files related to the permanent collection and ongoing projects and research.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Sort and classify archives according to established protocol; ;
  • Write descriptions of certain archival documents ensuring consistency in terms of shared information;
  • Scan documents and upload digital files to the database; 
  • Gain insight into Inuit art exhibitions at La Guilde; 
  • Support La Guilde's team in the conservation and reinstallation of the permanent collection;
  • Gain knowledge about Canadian First Nations, Inuit and contemporary craft artists;
  • Gain insight into various objects in our permanent collection; 
  • Develop an end-of-service project based on objects from La Guilde's collection.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Currently studying at university or college in the fields of archival science, digital information management, history, art history, or other relevant programs;
  • Excellent knowledge of French and good knowledge of English;
  • An interest in developing knowledge of Indigenous arts, crafts and Canadian art;
  • Experience of using databases, such as VeevArt, File Maker Pro, etc.;
  • Proficiency in Office suite, PC and MAC environment;
  • Versatility and openness to a variety of tasks;
  • Archival experience (a plus) ;

CONDITIONS

  • Start date: May 14 ;
  • 16-week contract, full-time;
  • Schedule: Monday to Friday (may require occasional flexibility: evenings and weekends);
  • 28 sick or personal hours per year;
  • Employee discount;
  • Salary: $19/hr
