This sculpture depicts the gyrfalcon. In medieval times European aristocracy and Kings treasured this bird of prey; and it was adored by the Vikings. During this time, the trade of gyrfalcons was an essential component of the Icelandic economy; and eventually, it would become the national bird of Iceland.
