Born in Germany, Ute Wolff has been living in Montreal since 2005. There, she pursues a hybrid practice in design, art, and craft. She obtained a Master's degree in Textile Design (1999) at the University of Art and Design Halle "Burg Giebichenstein" (Germany) and worked there as an artistic and scientific collaborator until 2004. She is passionate about the unconventional use of technology and materials. In her explication of the possibilities of textile materials, she combines craft techniques with industrial technologies. Through a contemporary and poetic interpretation, she invents textile landscapes and creates lighting, as well as utilitarian objects that answer to a need for sensual and contemplative objects in this digital age. She has been awarded several prizes including the Wilhelm Lorch Stiftungle and the Bayerischer Staatspreis in Germany. Her work has been shown in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Canada, and Japan.
