Artist Marie-José Gustave has lived and worked in Quebec for over 20 years. She creates works—mainly in paper threads—whose subject matter is crossbreeding, migration, and the search for identity. With a background in clothing production, she uses the flexibility and rigidity of paper threads to create volume. Through the use of knitting, crocheting, and braiding, she also plays with shadows and light. Originally from Guadeloupe, born in France and now living in Quebec, Marie-José Gustave questions the notion of identity in relation to migration and the meeting of cultures. She has received grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the Canada Council for the Arts. She has exhibited her work in Canada and internationally.
