Marcy Friesen is an artist of Swampy Cree and Welsh descent, born in Nipawin, Saskatchewan, currently living and working in Carrot River. She has been interested in beading since childhood, inspired by the women in her family. Her creative drive leads her to convey her passionate vision through her mind, hands, and beadwork in new and liberating ways, exploring the materials she uses and loves: wild animal fur, leather, and beads. In her practice, the natural and the synthetic unite in ways that embrace the contemporary condition, transforming understandings and expectations of cultural production. In 2019-2020, she was a recipient of the CARFAC mentorship program and worked with renowned artist Ruth Cuthand. She also received a grant from the Saskatchewan Art Board that same year. Her work has since been featured at the Contemporary Indigenous Art Biennial (BACA) in Montreal, the Whyte Museum in Banff, the Remai Modern in Saskatoon, and the Mackenzie Art Gallery in Regina, and as part of the exhibition Radical Stitch at the National Gallery of Canada in 2024.
