Lukie Airut (1942-2018) was an Inuk artist from Igloolik (Iglulik, NU) who specialized in carving. He began carving stone and bone in his early twenties under his father George Kappianaq. He obtained his materials, such as walrus teeth and whale skulls, while hunting. Lukie Airut often retained the natural shape of the bones used in his work to use as a place to stage his sculptures. Today, his work is in many exhibition venues, such as the Winnipeg Art Gallery (MB) and the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto, ON).
