Jordan Bennett is a multidisciplinary Mi’kmaw visual artist from Stephenville Crossing, Ktaqamkuk (Newfoundland). He was one of two artists to represent Newfoundland and Labrador during the 2015 Venice Biennale at the Galleria Ca’Rezzonico. His practice consists of painting, sculpture, video, installation and sound. His public installations are present across Canada, especially in the Atlantic provinces—the traditional Mi’kmaq territory. In his work Bennett explores land, language, the act of visiting, familial histories, as well as the Mi'kmaq and Beothuk visual culture of Ktaqamkuk and challenges colonial perceptions of Indigenous histories. He is also the recipient of many awards, notably the 2019 Van Houtte Masters’ Fund Program. His work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, the Museum of Art and Design in NYC, the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts in Santa Fe, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, The Power Plant in Toronto and the Museum of Fine Arts of Montreal.
