Heather Shillinglaw is a multidisciplinary visual artist and environmental activist of Nehiyaw (Cree), Dene (Chipewyan), Saulteaux/Ojibwe, and European (Scottish and French) ancestry. She is a member of the Cold Lake First Nations in Alberta and a graduate of the Alberta College of Art and Design. Her art is held in numerous prestigious public and private collections, including TD Bank (Edmonton), the Canadian Native Arts Foundation (Toronto), and the Canadian Embassy in Buenos Aires. She has exhibited across Canada, Europe, and South America, and her portfolio includes several significant public art commissions. In 2009, she was invited by the Canadian embassy to travel to Argentina, to exchange with anthropologists along with Tobian-Guarani and Mapuche healers. After a visit in 2016 to the Budapest Environmental Exhibition in association with the Hungarian National Art Gallery, she developed Metis Ecological Arts Message (MEAM), which has the mission of reducing our environmental footprints and using art as a healing practice.
