La Guilde proudly presents the exhibition Côté passager by glass artist David Frigon-Lavoie.
For his first solo exhibition, David Frigon-Lavoie follows his artistic exploration centered on integrating surrounding landscapes. He presents a series of blown glass pieces, using different colouring and engraving techniques to create contemporary decorative objects. Programmed obsolescence, technological progress, and abandoned industrial structures and buildings are dominant themes in his approach. He often incorporates metal in his works, a material emblematic of the industrial revolution.
In the exhibition Côté passager, David Frigon-Lavoie draws on glassmaking traditions while adding a modern twist to some classic forms, combining past and present in reinterpreted panoramas. He uses an ancient glassmaking technique called Incalmo, which consists of making a piece in several distinct sections with different colours and textures. These segments must match together perfectly to be heat-fitted together. He then engraves the glass to carve images, revealing the transparency hidden beneath the opaque surface layer. This process is akin to the appearance of cameo glass.
About the artist
From his early days as a student at Espace VERRE (Montreal), David Frigon-Lavoie discovered his passion for glass, a mysterious and exciting material. While assisting several renowned glass artists, such as Patrick Primeau, he perfected various techniques. His decorative and sculptural objects have earned him several grants and have been featured in numerous exhibitions in Quebec and Ontario. Today, he divides his time between creating in the studio and teaching at Espace VERRE.
