As part of the exhibition La céramique en plein essor, La Guilde is proud to invite ceramic artist Eliza Au for a demonstration on the creation of clay lattice tiles. After presenting her journey and previous works, she will explain the various steps involved in making a clay tile and introduce you to different techniques, such as casting. With computer-aided design [CAD], the artist first creates a model, around which she makes a mould. She then pours the clay into the mould to form a tile with complex and refined patterns. Finally, from these tiles, she creates a three-dimensional sculpture. The demonstration ends with a question period during which you can discover more about these surprising processes that she masters. Come and learn innovative techniques related to working with clay!
For those who couldn't attend, here is the video of Eliza Au’s demonstration on her work and approach:
Originally from Vancouver (BC), ceramic artist Eliza Au investigates how past and present architectural ornaments participate in the notion of sacred space. At the intersection of digital technology, craft, and architecture, her artistic approach is similar to that of a mathematical equation. Defined by both negative space and positive space, her work evokes elegance, beauty and balance. Along with her artistic career, Eliza Au teaches ceramics at the University of North Texas (USA). Her work is included in numerous public and private collections, including the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery in Waterloo (ON).
