Mattiusi Iyaituk

Born in a hunting camp near Akulivik (Nunavik, QC), Mattiusi Iyaituk lives with his family in Ivujivik (QC) since 1955. He trained as a police officer in Montreal and worked as an officer in Ivujivik until 1984 when he decided to focus on his artistic career after receiving a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts. He began to sculpt at the age of 14, following in the footsteps of his father and his brother who were both sculptors. From that day, he dreamt of living from his art, without imagining that he would one day be exhibited in museums across Canada and internationally and would be one of the rare Inuit artists to travel and teach workshops in places such as Siberia, China, the United States, and France. In 1996, he became president of the Inuit Art Foundation and, in 2018, Compagnon des arts et des lettres du Québec.
