Jutai Toonoo

    Born near Kinngait (Cape Dorset, NU), Jutai Toonoo (1959-2015) learned to carve from his father at the young age of 7. He started his career in the 1990s as a carver and later moved towards illustration, printmaking, and jewellery. Jutai Toonoo used vivid colours to express his emotions in his artworks, which often addressed social issues affecting his community. Shortly before passing, he was the artist-in-residence at the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto). Jutai Toonoo’s work was extensively exhibited and is part of many important public collections, including the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa, ON).
