Based in Gjoa Haven (NU), carver Wayne Puqiqnak is part of the third generation of artists in his family and was greatly influenced by the work of his father and grandfather. He likes to carve hunters and drum dancers with lots of movements and expressive faces, adopting the classic style from his region, Kitikmeot, which is known for its “grotesque” style, including gaping mouths full of crooked teeth, large flaring nostrils, and wide staring eyes. His work beautifully reflects the traditions of his culture, which he captures with masterful skill.
